Moodle Open LMS
One plugin, two platforms

Moodle and Open LMS

Because Open LMS is built on Moodle, the same plugin serves both.

Turn every PDF in your courses into an accessible document. EqualWeb finds the PDF files across your site, gives each one an accessibility score of 0-100 against the PDF/UA standard, and links a detailed report that points to every issue - so instructors and administrators know exactly what to fix. Checks are free within a daily quota, and AI remediation fixes and replaces inaccessible files in one click.

  • Automatic discovery of every PDF - checked from a single dashboard
  • A 0-100 PDF/UA score for every file, plus a detailed report
  • Instructor view per course · admin dashboard for the whole site
  • Free accessibility checks - no account and no API key needed, within a daily quota
  • One-click AI remediation - fixes and replaces inaccessible files
  • Supports every currently supported Moodle release - 4.5 (LTS), 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2, including the new 5.1 directory structure
  • Works on self-hosted Moodle and on managed Open LMS - exactly the same plugin
  • Available to download and install directly, with automatic updates

Open LMS is a managed Moodle service - the same plugin runs there. Open LMS customers add it through Open LMS support.

What you get

The full EqualWeb PDF Accessibility product, in Moodle

An admin tool plugin for every supported Moodle release - 4.5 (LTS), 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 - and for Open LMS, which runs on Moodle. Every document gets a 0-100 accessibility score against 80+ PDF/UA and WCAG rules, a detailed report with a permanent link, a legal-priority classification with a full audit trail - and one-click AI remediation that replaces the file in place, so nothing anyone linked, embedded or bookmarked ever breaks.

  • An "active learning material" category built for education: a visible course plus a visible activity means high priority
  • Aligned with the legal reality for education: materials behind login are covered too - current-use is the legal line, not public visibility
  • Course- and folder-level tagging so academic staff can mark what is service-critical
  • Managed through a Moodle admin capability
Minimum access, maximum transparency

What we see - and what we never see

  • What we get

The plugin runs inside your Moodle - course files stay where they are. Only the document being checked is sent for processing.

  • Who approves

    Your Moodle administrator installs it

  • What we never see

No student data, grades or course content beyond the files being checked

Your files are never stored with EqualWeb - a document is processed in the remediation cloud and the result returns to Moodle. Keys and credentials are stored encrypted (AES-256).

How it works

Scan. Score. Prioritize. Remediate in place.

  1. Scan

The files of all courses across your Moodle instance. Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) are detected too, for accessible conversion.

  2. Score

Every document is checked against 80+ PDF/UA and WCAG rules and gets a 0-100 score plus a detailed, permanently-linked report.

  3. Prioritize

Documents are classified by signals from Moodle itself: required for service, public, internal, or archive (pending your confirmation) - so you fix what matters first.

  4. Remediate

One click sends the document to EqualWeb's AI remediation - tagging, reading order, alt text, metadata - and the accessible file replaces the original in place. The original stays restorable.

FAQ

PDF accessibility in Moodle and Open LMS - common questions

Do course materials behind login need to be accessible?
Yes. Current regulation draws the legal line at documents in current use - including materials behind login, like an LMS or staff portal. EqualWeb's Moodle plugin is built around exactly that: active learning material gets top priority.
Which Moodle versions are supported?
All of them. The plugin supports every currently supported Moodle release - 4.5 (LTS), 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2 - including the new directory structure introduced in Moodle 5.1, and compatibility is verified on real Moodle sites running both structures. It is an admin tool that scans the files of all courses in the instance, and the same plugin runs on Open LMS.
Does it work with Open LMS?
Yes. Open LMS is a managed Moodle service, so the same EqualWeb plugin runs there - one plugin covers both platforms. Open LMS customers add it through Open LMS support.
Does it touch student data?
No. The plugin works on course files only. It scans, scores and remediates PDFs - student records and grades are never part of the flow.
